Discover the Hanging Bridges of Chulilla
Looking for a quick escape filled with nature, fresh air, and views that take your breath away? Then take note of this route: the famous hanging bridges of Chulilla, right in the heart of Los Serranos, just an hour from Valencia.
If you’ve already walked the Caminito del Rey path in Málaga and, like me, were left wanting more canyon views and thrilling walkways, the hanging bridges of Chulilla will bring back that feeling — but in a more relaxed and accessible way. Less height, more nature, and the same adventurous spirit.
A walk through canyons and rivers
The Ruta de los Pantaneros is more than just a hiking trail — it’s a journey back in time. Years ago, it was the path used by workers building the Loriguilla reservoir.
Today, you can walk it at your own pace, crossing two spectacular hanging bridges that look like something out of an adventure movie. And the best part? You don’t need to be an expert hiker — just wear comfortable shoes and bring your sense of adventure.
What to expect along the way
From the very start of the trail, you’ll feel there’s something special about this place. The Turia River stays by your side the whole way, winding through steep rock walls that will make you stop again and again just to take photos. You’ll hear the water, the breeze, the occasional bird… and little else. Pure, natural silence.

The hanging bridges of Chulilla are, without a doubt, the highlight of the route. The first one rises about 15 meters above the canyon, and the second offers even more breathtaking views.
They’re completely safe, and crossing them is one of those little adventures that make you smile without even realizing it.
The route is easy and well-marked. It’s about 10 km round trip and takes around 3 hours if you walk at a relaxed pace. It’s perfect for couples, friends, or even families with kids. Just avoid the hottest hours of the day, especially in summer.
Hanging Bridges of Chulilla – Travel Tip
The Ruta de los Pantaneros starts right in the main square, Plaza de la Baronía. From there, you can also access other trails like Charco Azul or the Callejones de Chulilla.
Get there early to avoid crowds and take some time to explore the charming village of Chulilla. Its whitewashed streets, hilltop castle, and sunny terraces make the perfect end to your day.
How to get to Chulilla from Valencia (without a car)
If you don’t have a car, no worries — you can still get to Chulilla by public transport, though it takes a bit of planning.
The easiest option is:
- Cercanías train to Llíria: From Valencia Nord station, take line C3 toward Llíria. The journey takes around 50–60 minutes.
- Bus from Llíria to Chulilla: Once in Llíria, you can catch an intercity bus to Chulilla. It’s operated by Autoescuelas Herca, but the schedule can vary depending on the day, so be sure to check it in advance.

Chulilla Castle

You can’t leave without hiking up to the castle. Perched on a hilltop, the views from up there are absolutely amazing. You’ll see the entire canyon you just walked through, the rooftops of the village, and the reservoir in the distance. The path is easy to follow and totally worth the climb.
The Old Town
Get lost in its whitewashed alleys, with flower-filled pots and corners that look straight out of a fairytale. Walking through the village feels like stepping back in time, and you’ll likely find a cozy bar with a terrace to enjoy a drink at your own pace.
The Charco Azul Trail
If you’re up for a little more adventure, this short extra trail takes you to a crystal-clear natural pool surrounded by nature. It’s a gentle and pleasant walk — perfect for relaxing or cooling off if the day gets hot.
Chulilla Alleys

A lesser-known but fascinating option: a short path through narrow rock formations that feel like a small natural maze. It’s perfect if you’re visiting with kids or just want to extend your day without much effort.
Local food
And of course, don’t leave without trying something local. Ask for ajoarriero, gazpacho serrano, or olla churra — traditional dishes that taste even better after a long walk.
Why Are the Hanging Bridges There?
The hanging bridges of Chulilla weren’t originally built for hiking. In fact, their origin is quite practical — and in some ways, heroic.
They were constructed in the 1950s, during the building of the Loriguilla reservoir, located further downstream. At the time, workers — known as pantaneros — needed a quick and direct way to get from the village to the construction site, crossing the deep canyon carved by the Turia River.
That’s how these bridges came to be: not as a tourist attraction, but as part of a functional route. They were simple structures, designed to handle the constant foot traffic of people and equipment in rough terrain. Over time, the path was abandoned… until it was restored and reopened as a hiking route.
Walking the Bridges of Chulilla Today
Nowadays, the bridges are completely safe, reinforced with modern materials, and have become one of the most photographed and visited spots in the Valencian region. But walking across them still gives you the feeling of following in the footsteps of those who had no other way across.
Hanging Bridges of Chulilla, wrap up
If you’re looking for a getaway near Valencia that combines nature, history, and a touch of adventure, the hanging bridges of Chulilla are for you. It’s an easy, stunning route — perfect for switching off without overthinking it.
Like all the getaways I share on this blog, this one has that special something that makes it truly unique. So, you know what to do: grab your backpack, lace up your shoes, and go discover places that are truly worth it. Chulilla will win you over.
